Smooth muscle cells

Confocal micropgraph of cardiac left ventricle with Myosin 11 (Myh11, red) and nuclei (white) staining to identify smooth muscle cells. Pinto Lab - Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute.

Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) are a contractile cell type found in a number of tissues including arteries and large veins. They support tissue contraction and pulsatile action.

Marker genes: Tagln, Acta2, Myh11.

Abbreviated cell population name(s): SMC (e.g. “SMC” or “SMC1”, “SMC2”…).
